Environmental Management

Chinnery Construction is committed to delivering civil infrastructure works in a responsible and environmentally conscious manner. We recognise that much of our work occurs within sensitive environments, established communities, and active infrastructure corridors throughout North Canterbury.

Environmental protection is embedded in our planning, site management, and day-to-day operations.

    • Site-Specific Environmental Management Plans (EMP) developed where required

    • Compliance with CCC, regional council, and principal contractor environmental standards

    • Pre-start identification of environmental risks and constraints

    • Coordination with inspectors and environmental officers

    • Clear allocation of environmental responsibilities to site supervisors

Environmental considerations are addressed at project planning stage - not just during construction.

  • We understand that sediment discharge is one of the primary risks in civil construction.

    Controls include:

    • Silt fences and sediment barriers

    • Inlet protection and bunding

    • Stabilised site access points

    • Controlled stockpile management

    • Progressive backfilling and reinstatement

    • Rapid stabilisation of exposed ground

Where required, additional controls are implemented to suit weather conditions and ground type.

  • Chinnery Construction maintains in-house dewatering capability, including high-volume pumps and a 4.5m³ settlement tank, allowing controlled and compliant discharge. Owning our own dewatering systems allows us to respond quickly and manage discharge responsibly.

    Our approach includes:

    • Assessment of groundwater and discharge requirements

    • Use of settlement tanks for sediment separation

    • Controlled discharge to approved locations

    • Monitoring of discharge clarity

Avoidance of uncontrolled run-off to stormwater systems

  • When working near live services or waterways, we implement:

    • Careful excavation methods around existing assets

    • Reduced disturbance trenchless installation where appropriate

    • Controlled refuelling procedures

    • Spill kits carried in vehicles and on active sites

    • Immediate response procedures for environmental incidents

Our trenchless capability (Thrusters and Grundomat systems) also reduces surface disruption and environmental impact in suitable conditions.

  • Operating within established communities requires awareness and professionalism. Our goal is to complete works efficiently while minimising disruption to residents and road users.

    We manage:

    • Dust suppression through controlled water application

    • Noise management during working hours

    • Safe and tidy worksites

    • Clear communication with affected residents where required

    • Prompt reinstatement of footpaths, berms, and road surfaces

  • Chinnery Construction promotes a culture of environmental awareness. We understand that environmental management is not just compliance-driven - it reflects the standard of contractor we aim to be through:

    • Toolbox discussions including environmental topics

    • Ongoing staff training

    • Supervisor accountability for environmental controls

    • Post-project review of environmental performance
